When is a med spa ready to open a second location?
By the partners at Shefa Atelier ·
The short answer
You are closer to ready when your first location runs well without you for weeks at a time, your client journey is consistent across providers, you have a second leader in place, and you can afford a slow first six months at the new site.
Why we care about this question
Our co-founders Roxanne Rittberg and Amber Foster worked together to grow Luxura Aesthetic Medical Spa to six locations in two years. Amber led property scouting, negotiations, permitting and pre-construction. The lessons below come from that experience.
The readiness checklist
- Can location one run for two weeks without you? If not, a second site doubles problems, not revenue.
- Are booking, consultations, follow-up, inventory and hiring written down well enough to train someone new?
- Do clients convert similarly regardless of which provider they see?
- Do your existing client addresses suggest where demand already is?
- Who will run the new location day to day, and are they trained before you sign the lease?
- Can the first location carry the new one through a slow start?
Build-out takes longer than planned
Permits, inspections and contractor schedules rarely move as fast as you hope. Plan for rent before opening, and don't count opening-month revenue in your projections.
Rules for medical spa ownership, supervision and licensing differ by state. Confirm requirements for any new state or city with a qualified healthcare attorney before committing.
Getting a second opinion
Expansion is one of the decisions our Private Growth Partnership is built for: a senior counterpart to pressure-test timing, sequencing and structure. We advise; your team and your attorney, broker and contractors carry out the work.
