What should I ask before hiring a med spa consultant?

By the partners at Shefa Atelier ·

The short answer

Ask what the consultant has operated, what they will review, what you will receive, and who will implement the recommendations. Clarify fees, access, commitments and success measures before signing, and look for someone who can explain limits as clearly as potential opportunities.

What experience applies to my problem?

Ask about responsibilities, not just years in the industry. Someone who has led sales may bring different judgment from someone focused on marketing or expansion. Describe your business question and ask which parts of their background are directly relevant.

A useful answer connects experience to the decisions ahead without claiming that another business's outcome will repeat in yours. Ask how they would approach uncertainty and what they would need to understand before recommending a change.

  • What did you personally own in your previous operating roles?
  • Which problems are outside your experience or advisory scope?
  • How do you distinguish a demand problem from a conversion problem?

What will you review and deliver?

Ask for the actual shape of the engagement: preparation, meetings, written work and follow-up. Broad promises to improve growth are not a substitute for knowing what happens after you sign. Clarify whether you receive a prioritized plan or a large collection of ideas.

Keep the review at the business level. Aggregate revenue, appointment activity, acquisition costs and sales-process descriptions can support strategic discussions. Patient health records should not be collected or shared for this advisory work.

  • What must we prepare before the first conversation?
  • How will recommendations be prioritized?
  • What will we have in writing after the review?

Who will do the work afterward?

Advisory and execution are different services. Ask who changes the booking process, trains staff, updates communications and monitors follow-through. If those tasks remain with your practice, decide whether you have a capable owner for each priority.

Clarify access between meetings and how additional requests are handled. A consultant who provides strategic guidance is not necessarily available for daily management. Getting that distinction clear protects the working relationship and helps you budget for any separate implementation support.

How will we judge progress and manage the commitment?

Ask which business measures would help evaluate the agreed work and how their definitions will be kept consistent. A thoughtful consultant should distinguish completed actions from financial outcomes and acknowledge that results depend on factors they do not control.

Read the proposed scope and agreement together. Confirm the fee, initial commitment, meeting cadence, ending terms and exclusions. If a promise sounds unusually certain, ask what assumptions support it rather than accepting a confident presentation as evidence.

  • What would make you recommend changing direction?
  • How will we know whether our team followed through?
  • What happens if our reporting is incomplete?
